The New Petitcodiac Bridge

1. Bridge Update

The highlight of this months general meeting came when Brenda Orchard, Director of Corporate Services & Economic Development of the Town of Riverview, unveiled the most recent pictures of the new bridge. The bridge, which is scheduled for completion in 2005, has many attractive features from wrought iron railings to highly ornate lighting. Clearly one of the most attractive features of the new bridge will be the four traffic lanes, two in each direction - a clear contrast to our present situation with the Gunningsville Bridge. These extra lanes coupled with the future connection to Vaughn Harvey Boulevard promises to bring added convenience to anyone wishing to travel to Riverview.

2nd Annual Christmas Meet & Greet

The christmas Meet & Greet was held on December 6th 2003 at the Lions center in Riverview. Due to the fact that it was a particularly cold evening in addition to many other christmas functions happening that night, attendance was not quite as high as we had hoped for. In total about 35 people attended the event over the course of the night. The entertainment of the evening was provided by a Jazz duet from Saint John. They sang a wide variety of classic jazz and christmas songs to more traditional dancing songs, much to the delight of the many ballroom dancers present. This also provided entertainment for those of us that are not so elegant upon the dance floor. Once again this year we asked everyone to bring a gift for donation to the Albert County Christmas Aid Program, we gathered a nice variety of toys to present to them and have since received there thanks for our involvement.

Hudson Design, who have been working with Downtown Riverview towards the development of a new association identity have begun the final stages of this process. On January 7th 2004 a meeting was held to have a look at the first proposed images for our new logo. The majority of the work was well received and after lengthy discussion and comparison we gave some additional suggestions and they took those comments to adjust the images accordingly. On January 21st 2004 at Noon in the Boardroom we will be meeting for the fourth time in this process to evaluate the adjustments. Everyone who is a member of Downtown Riverview is encouraged to attend and give their input.

When this project comes to a close we will see many other things that have been awaiting this processes completion. We will be able to design and distribute the new Riverview Business Directories as well as the new Downtown Riverview door decals - replacing the old RBIC decals. As well as the start of our online business directory and local business profiles on our web site

Congratulation

The Downtown Riverview Business Association would like to extend congratulations to Brenda Orchard on her recent change in position from the Town of Riverview's Economic Development Officer to Director of Corporate Services & Economic Development. Brenda has been a tremendous help to our Association recently and we truly wish her all the best with her new designation.

Councilors Corner

We had an incredible year of growth in Riverview in 2003. One of the measures that we use at Town Hall to gauge growth is building permit data. Our year-end building permit figures have just been released showing 2003 as our all-time high in building permit values. This past year also had the highest number of building permits issued as well.

The previous highest year for building permits values was in 2000 but it should be noted that in that year we had two major projects in the Town: the new Sobeys and the new Liquor Store.

We are looking forward to 2004 and expect to see continued growth and development!

Presidents Message

January 14, 2004

This past year has brought many positive changes to our Association, that are truly beneficial to our businesses. A couple of successful new developments were our mentorship program and Profit Learn Course. The Profit Learn course gave us better marketing tools to develop a better technique to segment the market and analyze data to better meet the needs of the customer. Because we feel every businessperson would benefit from this course, we will be offering another one soon.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our directors, the executive, and our general manager, Jeffrey Devos for their hard work and support this past year.

I also want to thank Deputy Mayor Broderick and councilors for their continued support of our Association.

The position of President of the Business Association has provided me with the opportunity to work with the councilors and Town staff and has given me a better understanding of municipal politics. I have enjoyed observing the decision making process of Council and have decided to run as Councilor at Large in the upcoming municipal election.

It is my wish that 2004 brings to each of you good health, prosperity, and good fortune.

Sherry Wilson
